Roofing nails are used in roof installation to fasten shingles, to install roofing felt for waterproofing and to attach roof tiles and sheet metal. There are different kinds of roofing nails, made of different materials and in various sizes. All roofing nails have wide, flat heads and short shanks. The tips of the nails are sharp and pointed for easy insertion, so you don’t break the shingles or damage the wood when driving the nails through. Different roofing materials require different types of roofing, there are steel, aluminum-though not recommend where they can be exposed to salt or chemicals- and carbon steel alloys. Each roofing type of nail has a different purpose aluminum is used with metal shingles where are as steel is used in common housed roofing shingles, carbon steel alloy is used when it is imperative that they support a lot of weight and cannot be replaced very often. Nails can vary in size usually between 2 and 5 cm. or 1-6 inches, the short shank and large head allows for easy to install and so they will not poke through the shingle and can secure it.
